the little garden that could
First Things First

Call me a friendly enthusiast

…and a student and a caterer and whatever else you like. I am not a gardener (quite yet), but I know that the knowledge belonging to folks like that is invaluable to the survival of man. In an attempt to survive, beautify, and physically change my surroundings for the better, I plan to start a garden in my neighborhood on chase street behind the Varsity. My Nigerian Grandmother taught me a few things about pulling food from the dirt in my younger years and hopefully I’ll be able to put them to use now. Now because I’m tired of dreaming about it; talking about it.

Anywho, my stretch of the block can look fairly dismal because of the the overgrown lot across from my duplex; the bat-ridden, abandoned house next door; the shady characters that roam @ 3 o’clock in the morning (YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE!). Yesterday I started (quite literally) the ground work for N. Chase Street’s very own community garden. Hopefully beautifying the place and sharing fruits and vegetables with my neighbors will garner a new attitude about the area I call home.

The Yard on January 3, 2010

Right now I’m pretty broke and yet i need to get supplies. I only had a few dollars yesterday so I spent the money on two pairs of gloves. Somewhat disappointed that I didn’t leave Lowe’s with a machete or some fancy garden sheers, I consoled myself with the montra: “first things first”. I decided that it’s best I didn’t buy the expensive stuff first. I need to assess the situation by taking note of the facts on the ground (haha, pun intended). Combing the area with fingers will give me an intimate understanding of what I’ve gotten myself into.

I’m going over to Commonground Athens today to see if they can help me somehow finance the whole shebang ‘cause a bro’s gotta make rent! Lookout for ways you can help.
