starts
A large six foot tall bird from the georgia mountains told me starts from the rooftop of the geography building are ready. Do we want any? Some need to go to Pinewood, some maybe to Willie Mae. Do we have room?
Anonymous asked: Hello....what an inspiration. Congratulations and I think what you're doing and what you've already done are wonderful! I have some volunteer tomato plants - - would you like some? They are either delicious cherry tomatoes that were extremely productive last year or else an heirloom tomato of a regular size that are pink when ripe. Since they are volunteers, we won't know which...

Tut, tut: it looks like rain
Apparently meteorologist predict that there’s a storm brewin’. If by 12:30 pm it happens to be raining, we will have to take the furlough…
…don’t worry though, ‘cause when we’re working for free, you’re probably not going to miss the money anyhow.

2010 Georgia Organics Conference
So by windfall, I was able to attend some workshops at the Georgia Organics Conference…
1. SMALL SCALE COMPOSTING | Duane Marcus
Interesting. He talked about compost. Real nice guy. He pretty much drove home the idea that a compost heap is nothing more than a controlled ecosystem. As gardeners, we have to make them work for us. Although it seems daunting, it’s actually really easy....

The Difference a Sifter Makes
I borrowed a sifter from The Homemade Garden…
and MAN what a difference a sifter makes!
Before the sifter:
After the sifter:
…you can clearly see the difference in the texture of the soil. Finer soil will allow plant roots to permeate much more easily than otherwise. I knew the soil was rocky, but didn’t realize how rocky. I’ll have to post the pic of...

SUNDAY, SUNDAY, SUNDAY!!!
So I’m starting to believe that the sabbath is the new work day…
Because I’m always working (and wasn’t trying hard enough), I haven’t really found a set time to work in the garden. Sunday is now the go-to day! I’ll be out there from morning till late afternoon.
This Sunday is gonna be a nice one
…so hopefully I’ll see you there

Jedi Gardeners are Among Us!
I, a friendly enthusiast, am but a padawan…
I met another key figure in my gardening endeavor at that Common Ground town hall. Craig Page is the Executive Director of P.L.A.C.E. (Promoting Local Agriculture and Cultural Experiences) and he messaged me about him wanting to discuss my plans for the NCSCG. He’s a real, cool guy and he directed me towards a Flagpole story on a Pope...

What Was Lost, Now is Found
Turns out that Common Ground actually does exist…
and isn’t some sort of mythical, Athenian story passed through the ages. I went to the town hall meeting @ Cine today and it was definitely the jam 360 (i.e. an all-around, cool experience)! Mayoral candidates for the 2010 election (going down THIS SUMMER!) spoke on issues ranging from recycling to living wage. All quite...

Mythical Common Ground
Turns out Common Ground Athens is not quite a bust…
I had been trying to contact a Ms. Jenna Moon who is listed on the website as the Executive Director of Common Ground Athens. I have yet to receive a response. I visited the site today and noticed a Coming Soon event in the top of the right sidebar. I clicked it and it took me here:
The poster is a Ms. Emily Aland (whom I emailed)....

Oh SNAP!
Still no fruits from the pursuit…
of the Southern Seed Legacy or Common Ground Athens. I have, though, come across potential sources for funding. Too bad they are all grants and such for the next year. Seems quick money is hard to find.
Anyway, my friend Stefanie suggested a while back that I look into the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (oh SNAP! …couldn’t...

Here Today, Gone Tomorrow
So I went to see if I could get some help from Common Ground Athens…
turns out they’ve up and moved!!! Their site claimed they were located @ 157 N. Newton. I went there, and to my surprise, saw some chill dudes smokin’ cigarettes.
I was not very surprised. The Common Ground Athens site looked rather abandoned anyway. The last post was in May, 2008—it’s...

First Things First
Call me a friendly enthusiast…
…and a student and a caterer and whatever else you like. I am not a gardener (quite yet), but I know that the knowledge belonging to folks like that is invaluable to the survival of man. In an attempt to survive, beautify, and physically change my surroundings for the better, I plan to start a garden in my neighborhood on chase street behind the...
